Why did we choose a button? | Riding leggings with a phone pocket

This is the story of why we chose a button to close the phone pocket on our Flexars.

Horse riding leggings with pockets have become increasingly popular in recent years.  Surprisingly, there is a lot of design work that goes into designing jodhpurs with pockets, and everything is chosen for a specific reason. This includes, but is not limited to, the fastening!

There are a few options we could have chosen as a closure for our phone pocket, this included:

  • Velcro;
  • A Zip;
  • A Button; or
  • No fastening.

We immediately ruled out no fastening - the last thing you need when you’re riding is your jodhpur pocket failing and your phone flying off your horse! No fastening might be okay for yard work, but definitely not for riding.

Fun fact! Our first-ever sample had a pocket with velcro. This worked well in principle but it ended up losing its stickiness over time, owing to the dirt and hair from equestrian work that we do every day. You can see a picture here:

We also thought about using a zip, but this was fiddly to use, had a chance of breaking and was not cost-effective.

Finally, we settled on a button! It offers ease of access and most importantly it is safe. It looks smart, and we love that we can add our branding onto it. We have worked with our manufacturer over the years to make it as secure as it can possibly be.

That is why we we chose a button to fasten our pockets on our Flexars.
